When it comes to thrift stores, not much can compare to the Goodwill Outlets. For both the good and the bad (disgusting, actually).

The thrill of finding amazing things for dirt cheap, the competition with a dozen other bargain-crazy people, and the potential to flip your finds for a healthy profit.

But even if you’re not a reseller the bins can be a fun way to spend an afternoon. We’ve seen people find Gucci, Supreme, Patagonia, and all other kinds of luxury brands at the Goodwill Outlet. The problem is that they can be hard to find!

We know every thrift store within 45 minutes of us but, when a Goodwill Outlet opened up in our state it was a couple of months before we even found out about it.

To rectify this we put together this Goodwill Outlet Locator list which will tell you the location of every single Goodwill Outlet that we could find, state by state. As well as a bunch of tips to help you be successful once you finally get there!

What If There’s Not A Goodwill Outlet Near You?

If you can’t find a Goodwill Outlet near you, don’t give up hope, there might still be one. Because Goodwill Outlets go by several different names (Goodwill Clearance Centers, Goodwill Auction Houses, etc.) there might still be one.

The best thing to do is to make a call to the most central Goodwill location in your area and simply ask. They should be able to advise you if there is one nearby.

However, if there is not a Goodwill Outlet near you you’re probably better off simply visiting mom-and-pop thrift stores nearby.

Because we resell on eBay full-time it’s worth it for us to drive to different Goodwill Outlets but, for most people, it isn’t. Just be thrifty at what you have available and wait until there’s a Goodwill Outlet near you that opens up!

What To Expect When You Visit A Goodwill Outlet

When you first visit a Goodwill Outlet the experience can range from fun and enjoyable to slightly horrifying.

On my first trip, I found a shoe full of poop. I don’t say that to put you off but to put you on your guard. You never know what you’ll find.

While there are clean and well-run Outlets, most of them are located in a warehouse that sits in a commercial district. Because of this most Outlets tend to be a bit dirty and have limited facilities. No Goodwill Outlet washes or cleans the items they get (Goodwill doesn’t wash their clothes either so it’s not too surprising)

If you’re really unlucky, the Outlet near you might be very dirty.

However, once you get there you can expect the same things.

There are usually one or two rooms with large wheeled bins (usually blue) that are piled with “stuff”.

You simply dig through the bins and add whatever you want to your bag or cart (assuming you get a cart).

You should expect that many people will be wearing gloves and will be voracious for deals. When new inventory is brought out, I keep my distance. People literally run from across the room for new items and throw aside everything they don’t want.

The best method, in my opinion, for visiting a Goodwill Outlet for the first time is simply to take it slow and take everything in. Go where there aren’t any people and did through a couple of bins. You’ll get a good idea of the type of things for sale and you’ll be able to see how things work.

Don’t worry about missing out on stuff, there is always another bin coming out!

How Goodwill Outlets Work

Pricing For Goodwill Outlets Near You May Vary

One of the most exciting things about the Goodwill Bins is that all items are sold dirt cheap and you pay by the pound. This (usually) works out to the shopper’s advantage.

You simply dig through the bins, find what you want, weigh your items, and pay for what you have.

However, the way that Goodwill Outlets work in their entirety is a bit of a mystery. Or, it would be more accurate to say that, since each Outlet is different, it’s hard to nail down exactly what you’re getting and what you’ll find.

However, there are a few things I can tell you that seem to be true across the board.

Where Goodwill Outlets Get Their Product:

  • From Goodwill Retail Stores. Items that remain unsold at Goodwill Retail stores are typically pulled from the racks and sent to a clearance center. This is great for Outlet shoppers as many of these items are very nice items that were hugely overpriced. We’ve found entire bins at the outlet that had pants (or other similar items) in them with price tags and hangers still on.
  • Straight From Donations. Many Goodwill locations have far more inventory than they can handle. In some places (such as the Savers near my house) this excess inventory goes straight into the garbage. However, Goodwill typically sends this unsorted overflow directly to the outlets. This is where the real gems come from as this inventory hasn’t been picked over.

Once inventory comes into the back of the room it is roughly sorted into large bins with similar items.

This sorting is very rudimentary.

At my local Goodwill Outlet, we have bins for:

  • Clothing
  • Shoes
  • Hardgoods
  • Books
  • Linens

There are also shelves for larger items such as luggage, kitchen appliances, etc.

These bins are rotated every 15 minutes or so. This means that workers will bring out 4-6 new bins and swap out a section. The swapped-out bins are taken to the back. While in the back they can either be added to or let sit until they’re brought back in.

After a bin has gone through several rotations the items are typically sent to the dumpster.

5 Tips For Success At The Bins

1. Go Prepared

When I go to the Bins I take a water bottle (or coffee, you do you), gloves, a mask, and a snack. You’ll want to be prepared to spend some time there and make the most of your trip.

While gloves aren’t strictly required, I’d strongly recommend them. Items can be extremely dirty and even dangerous. Before I started wearing gloves every time I had several splinters and small pokes from digging through the random detritus.

2. Take A Bag

You’ll have to check the Goodwill Outlets near you (or call) to check but many don’t even have carts available for people!

The one closest to me has about 20 carts so you have to be waiting in line when they open to get one.

To save yourself from needing to carry all of your stuff around I’d recommend taking a large bag. I take a zippered Ikea bag. It’s large, super light, zips closed, and has backpack straps. Even if I do get a cart I keep the bag in the cart. This allows you to zip the items that you know you’re going to buy into the bag and keep them safe from cart thieves.

3. Dig All The Way To The Bottom Of The Bins

Many people furiously throw stuff around in a bin, assume that there is nothing of worth, and move on to the next one. I routinely follow behind people and find great things that they left behind. The key is to be patient and look at every item.

One of my best finds was a Louis Vuitton Wallet that was sitting in the bottom of a bin that a dozen other people had already picked through.

4. Spend The Day

The secret to success at the Bins is the same as any thrift store: spend lots of time there. Many resellers who make six figures a year on eBay and Mercari might spend a full 8 hours at the bins and only take home a dozen items.

The more time you spend at the Outlet the more bin rotations you’ll go through and the more fresh items you’ll see. If we are serious about finding inventory we usually spend the morning digging through bins, take a lunch break, and head back for a couple of hours in the afternoon.

5. Be Nice

Most people at the Goodwill Outlet are pushy jerks. Or, at least, a ton of people are. Don’t be one of them.

This isn’t simply a plea to humanity either. By being nice I’ve been helped out a ton. I’ve had several people bring me nice items they found but didn’t want. Also, if you even find a single shoe (or a piece of something you want) it’s very helpful to have been nice to people when you start asking around to see if anyone found the other shoe.

Conclusion

Assuming you can find a Goodwill Outlet near you, it can be a rewarding and money-saving way to spend a day. Not to mention tons of fun!

While the bins aren’t for everyone, most people I’ve taken there have found at least a couple of things that they love!
