ON THE UP AND UP!

We had some time to take some pictures, measurements, and crush some listings today!  We listed around 25 items which seems to appease eBay’s algorithms.  I’ve noticed that the more active I am with listing/relisting items, the more items I sell.  I’m not sure if it gives us a prioritization bump in eBay searches, more people follow items through to the store, or what…but it just seems to work!

TOP 4 SALES

Item: Men’s Johnston and Murphy “Melton” Cap Toed Shoes
Paid Price: $7.99
Sale Price: $52.76
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: At $7.99 these shoes were a no brainer to pick up.  Johnston & Murphy makes expensive shoes for both dress and casual wear.  I have a pair of suede chukka boots that have been sitting forever but much to our elation these sold within a week!

Item: Women’s Skechers Tone-Up Flip Flops
Paid Price: $2.99
Sale Price: $24.50
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: We’ve sold a copule pair of these Tone-Up flip flops but these went for the highest price yet.  They had everything going for them, trendy aztec pattern, a lazy way to get in shape, and no longer available in stores!  Even being a size 6, these sold within 2 days.

Item: True Religion Brand Full Zip Jacket
Paid Price: $11.99
Sale Price: $61.56
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: This jacket is a true survivor.  It has continued to hang out in our storage unit through many sales, price reductions, and even a re-photographing.  It seemed to be content to sit on eBay garnering watchers (It was up to 9 I think…) before selling for $61.56.  True Religion clothing is *always worth picking up and *usually sells fast.  Be very careful though as this is one of the most widely faked brands.  Spend the time in the store to look up the signs of authentic True Religion jeans so you don’t get taken as we have in the past.

Item: Vintage Woolrich Golf Sweater
Paid Price: $4.99
Sale Price: $25.50
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: This sweater had lots going for it.  Good subject matter, a good name (Woolrich), good age, and good condition.  Even though it was cotton instead of wool this sweater sold within a couple of weeks.  Unusual or vintage Woolrich clothing usually sells well.  The only genre of clothing from Woolrich that we’ve haven’t had any luck with is new button downs.  Be sure to research them well before buying and when in doubt, avoid them.

TWO FOR ONE SALES!

By “Two for one sales…” I mean that yesterday was such a crappy sales day on eBay that I’m not going to grace it with its own post!  We sold a solitary pair of shoes.  But lucky for them, they get to be included today!

Item: Lululemon Racerback Tank-Top – Size 6
Paid Price: 4.20
Sale Price: $26.39
Shipping: Free!
Notes: Lululemon is a high end maker of workout clothes for women.  People are always on the lookout for their clothing which makes them a quick easy sale!  This would have sold for the $29.99 it was listed for but when it sold on sale we celebrated anyway!

Item: Burton Full Zip Fleece Jacket – Men’s Size Large
Paid Price: $5
Sale Price: $25.96
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: High end fleece always sells, and no does Burton!  Not that Burton is high end, but put the two together and you’ve got a winner!  This was a heavy fleece that sat for only a month or so.  Be sure to pick up heavy fleece as people are always on the lookout for it.  Columbia fleece jacket and pullovers on the other hand….have been sitting in our storage unit for months!

Item: Men’s Nike Lunaracer –  Size 12.5
Paid Price: $8.99
Sale Price: $34.99
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: If I ever buy anything Nike to sell, it’s shoes.  While the majority of their clothing is slow to sell because it’s in such plentiful supply, gently used men’s shoes are always hot sellers.  The bigger the better!

Item: 1949 Printing of Taffy’s Foal
Paid Price: $.50
Sale Price: $19.95
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: On one of our first thrifting trips my wife grabbed this on the way past the book section.  Neither of us were born yesterday (1946 isn’t yesterday) but we hadn’t heard of Taffy’s Foal before.  As we had both sold books on Amazon we looked it up quick and decided that for the price of 50 cents we couldn’t really go wrong.  However…it’s has sat since then.  When first listed at a price of $29.95 it had a watcher within minutes and then sat with nothing for months.  We discounted it and finally got it on it’s way to a new home!

When I first started selling I was constantly checking for new watchers and views.  I would constantly lower the price on things until they sold and lost out on a good deal of profit.  The trick to doing well on eBay is be able to list things and forget them.  To come up with an inventory storage system so that you’re able to list an item for the price you wish to sell it for, store it, and wait for the right buyer.  Everything sells eventually.  These are both examples of things that, in my earlier eBay days, I would have kept lowering the price and missed out on those dollars!

2 SALES ONLY

Item: Fossil Key-Per Tote
Paid Price: $17.50
Sale Price: $44.99
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: We paid much more for this than we normally would.  However, the Fossil Key-Per line is pretty much a sure sale!  I’ve bought torn up key-per wallets that still sold, purses, etc.  This large tote was in relatively good shape and sold within a couple of weeks.

Item: Vintage Distressed Leather Cole Haan Brogues (Size 13)
Paid Price: $8.40
Sale Price: $39.99
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: Let me just start by saying…I LOVE THESE SHOES!  I seriously debated keeping them for myself and even wore them to church once before putting them up for sale.  Since I like them so, I listed them a bit higher than usual.  They sold in about 2 months.

SMALL SALES, BIG THRIFTING!

Sales today were back up a bit but still weren’t up to much.  When my wife and I went up to visit my parents however we totally killed it…. we visited a small town thrift store (the only one in the town I grew up in) and spent over $200.  New with tags Tommy Bahama stuff, north face, vintage clothing, snakeskin shoes, Tevas, golf and cycling clothing, you name it we got it!  I’m trying to get caught up on listing at the moment but hopefully in future I’ll be able to share more of our thrifting finds with you before they go on eBay!

Item: High Top Converse All-Stars
Paid Price: $4.99
Sale Price: $19.99
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: There was absolutely nothing special about these shoes and as a result they didn’t sell particularly well.  I no longer pick up Converse to list on eBay unless they’re very cheap or very unusual.  I’m still on the lookout for a pair of leather ones!

Item: Alfani Dean Men’s Brown Boots – New In Box
Paid Price: $15.00
Sale Price: $34.95
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: I found these boots in both black and brown (both new in box) at a small local thrift store.  Although they took longer to sell and sold at a lower price than I had hoped, they were easy to photograph and list and were at least marginally profitably.  The black pair is still hanging around however!

AND THEN THERE WAS ONE.

Some days are good sales days….some days are not.  If you want to make a living on eBay, days like this would be your greatest fear.  The only reason we had a sale today is that somone bid on these vintage Pyrex earlier in the week and the auction just happened to end today.  Days like this are what bring home to us that, unless we want to scale up/outsource menial jobs, eBay will be nothing more than a fun part time income for us at the time being!

TOP 1 SALE….

Item: Vintage Pyrex (Set of 3)
Paid Price: $4.90
Sale Price: $24.99
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: Vintage Pyrex is usually a great seller!  That is what I told myself when I stuck this lot in the cart anyway.  Unfortunately, I didn’t fully appreciate one thing…this set is ugly.  Well, maybe ugly isn’t the right word.  More like blase…or simply not very desirable.  On eBay, people love the unusual, the colorful, and the fantastic.  This set was none of those.  If it was green or pink, we would have been asking at least twice as much.  As it is, we were mostly just happy to get it moved.  And yes…we’re aware that it’s a poor picture! haha

Today we finally got our Zebra LP-2844 in the mail!  For those not in the know, this is a thermal label printer designed to save us money!  Shipping from home saves both time and money!  As an added bonus, the unusually sized box that the printer came in was the perfect size to ship on of our sales in! (The boots below)  This really made my day and I already dislike packing, and having to make my own box to fit something strange just compounds that.  Only two sales today but with a decent ROI! (Return on Investment)

Item: Hyperlite 3DS Wakeboard Boots
Paid Price: $8.40
Sale Price: 99.95
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: This is a fine example of an item that you don’t need to know anything about to sell.  I spied these sitting on a shelf at Savers and threw them into the cart.  While I was looking everything up before heading to the checkout I simply searched the name on eBay and checked “Completed.”  No dice.  Not to be put off so easily I googled them and found out that they were made just a couple years ago and retailed for over $300.  For the $8.40 that Saver’s wanted (after our 30% off coupon) I’ll take that gamble any day!  Some quick research helped me to write a description.  The boot was unusual enough that I figured anyone who searched them already knew what they wanted.  They boots sat for about a month before selling.  We probably could have asked more but these take up a lot of space and we definitely didn’t want to have them around come winter!  Good thing we didn’t put free shipping on these as they cost over $30 to ship to be re-homed in Florida!

Item: Tory Burch Strap Sandal Heels
Paid Price: 6.40
Sale Price: 59.99
Shipping: FREE!
Notes: This is something that my wife grabbed (of course).  I detest digging through women’s shoes.  We only buy women’s shoes that are in exceptionally good condition or are extremely expensive.  While this sounds common sense, I’ve bought too many pairs of women’s Sperry’s and Toms only to have them sit forever.  We have a pair of sparkly lace-up women’s Toms right now listed at only $25 that does nothing but gain watchers.  14 of them to be exact…Number of Sales: 5

Selling on eBay is the best!  My wife and I both love thrifting and being able to sell online really just gives us an excuse to buy things that we like.  We figure that if something is cool and we like it, someone else will!  We had a good number of sales today and are right on track for our monthly goals.  Our slump time of the month is approaching however so we’re going to listing lots and thriting more!  We had some sales today that I really wanted to share with you guys so I’ll have to put in 4 of our top sales today…

OUR TOP ..4.. SALES!

Item: Men’s Lacoste Half Zip
Paid Price: $5.60
Sale Price: $33.50
Shipping: FREE!
Notes: This is only of those solid sales that makes up a true eBay business.  You literally can’t find Burberry, Coach, or Salvatore Feragamo all the time.  While we do try to buy high dollar good with a profit margin of at least $20 to make it worth our time to thrift, clean, photograph, and list, a good portion of our sales are made up of items that profit in the $15 dollar range.  Lacoste is usually a good brand to pick up.  As usual, the higher the original cost the better is sells, so polos, sweater, jackets, etc. are usually takers.  I very rarely pick up Lacoste shoes however as they have to be unusual or mint to sell well.

Item: Ribbed Silk Tommy Bahama – XL
Paid Price: $4.90
Sale Price: $29.95
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: I usually pick up Tommy Bahama stuff to resell.  The conditions are the same for most things, I only pick up things that are cheap (I’d pay up to $10 for one that’s unique and a great size), and in excellent condition.  In casual cruise wear/hawaiian shirts, bigger is better.  When selling on eBay always be on the lookout for big sizes, I’ve sold 3XL Tommy Bahama shirts in the $50 range.  This one I grabbed because it was ribbed, something I hadn’t seen before, and had an awesome large floral pattern.

Item: Men’s Size 11.5 Newport Keens
Paid Price: $3.50
Sale Price: 34.95
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: Whenever you see men’s Keens, do a happy little dance!  Unless they’re totally destroyed, Men’s Keens always end up in the cart.  They’re usually cheap (all sandals at our local Savers are less than $5) and are consistent sellers.  Women’s Keens also sell but are not in the same realm as men’s.  These were in relatively decent shape and sold quickly the first time they were listed.  The buyer never paid however so when we relisted them we went for a high dollar amount and they sold after a month or so.  We also sold a pair of women’s keens today that went for around $24 + shipping.

Item: DNA Cycling Italian Made Cycling Leotard (w/ padded bottom)
Paid Price: $7.00
Sale Price: $34.95
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: This was one of those items that I had no idea how to price.  My wife and I assumed it was a fairly valuable item with a fairly low demand.  We placed it on bid first at a starting price of $39.95 but it got very few views, not watchers, and most definitely no bids.  We decided we probably were a bit hopeful in our pricing so relisted it with calculated shipping and a Buy It Now of 34.95 and it sold in a couple of weeks.  Cycling gear in great shape is almost always worth picking up.  Stick with well named cycling brands however instead of athletic gear companies who simply decide to make cycling gear….

EVERYONE NEEDS A LITTLE HIPPIE CRUISE-WEAR…

Sales haven’t been quite where we want over the past week or two so we put everything on 15% sale for 24 hours.  Several things sold during that time but unfortunately, they were things that probably would have sold anyway! haha
However, we’re not a fan of, “That sold so fast!  We should have asked for more!”  Unless we messed up and listed started something on a super low bid, we are just happy when things sell.

OUR TOP 3 SALES

Item: Duluth Trading Windproof Fleece
Paid Price: $4.20
Sale Price: $27.62
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: This is such a nice jacket that I was almost sad that it sold!  Have you ever had an item that is nice that you’re bummed when you find out how little it’s worth?  To add insult to injury, this jacket sold when all our clothing was on 15% sale.  Oh well!  5 bucks is 5 bucks!  I’m just happy it’s sold, people who try to squeeze every penny out of something are never satisfied and often their item never sells.

Item: Handmade Patchwork Button Down
Paid Price: $3.50
Sale Price: $24.99
Shipping: Free!
Notes: As it was homemade this shirt had no size so I had to take careful measurements.  It took a little while to sell which was expected.  However, the secret to selling something like this is to market it right.  This shirt was marketed as “Patchwork Hippie Cruise-wear.”  Cruise-wear almost always sells well.

Item: Taupe Largo Sperry Top-Siders
Paid Price: $6.99
Sale Price: $25.49
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: Sperry’s in good condition do sell, however they usually end up sitting for months or you have to accept a low offer.  I was pleasantly surprised that these sold within a couple weeks of listing.  If you don’t have shoe forms….buy them.  Thrift them of course though…

Pretty decent sales day today!  Only four things sold but our total sales was fueled by a few high sellers.  Unfortunately we didn’t get to thrift today as we both had to go to our real jobs.  Currently, our living room still looks like a thrift store threw up in it…we’ve been thrifting much more than listing and things are starting to creep up on us.  Over the next couple weeks we’ll have to be listing like crazy!  Out of things I dislike doing, listing is #2 (packaging and shipping being #1) so we need to stop let things hang around!

OUR TOP 3 SALES

Item: NWOT Men’s Coach Flip Flops
Paid Price: $11.99
Sale Price: $55.00 (Best Offer accepted)
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes: These flip flops have been the bane of my existence.  They’re one of those items that your’re super excited to find and think they’ll sell fast…but then they just sit for months garnering nothing but watchers and low-ball offers.  These actually sold once before and I accepted a return on them.  They were well described in the description but didn’t fit the buyer.  Coach will sell (especially men’s stuff) but usually sits longer than I like).

Item: Nike Shox Elite Flight – Size 16
Paid Price: $56
Sale Price: $8.99
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes:
Nike Shox always sell!  If you see any that are in relatively decent condition (people usually wear them to death) latch onto them and don’t let go!  Perhaps rashly, these were put on bid for a starting price of $29.99 and sold with a total of 5 bids for $56.00.

Item: Tommy Bahama Pineapple Bikini
Paid Price: $9.50
Sale Price: $34.99
Shipping: Buyer Paid
Notes:
The previous owner of this swim suit wore the top but left the tags on the bottom.  It sold the first time it was listed with only 1 bid.  Maybe we should have started it higher?

How we got our start selling on eBay

“Oh wow!  Kirstie, look at these shoes!  What size are they….oh….a size 6.  How about this jacket?!  Oh….it’s a 4XL.   Nothing fits me!  Tell you what….hand me that jacket, I’m going to sell it and buy one my size!

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how greatness occurs.  Or at least, how my wife and I doubled our income by thrifting and selling part-time on eBay.  At first we thought, “Well an extra couple hundred dollars a month would be nice” then it was “If we could pay our rent every month with eBay profits…” and now it’s, “Do you think we could buy a house within two years?!” haha

Which of course, brings us to this blog.  Hopefully you’ll find it entertaining and profitable while it motivates us and help us keep our goals in sight!  Everyday I’ll be updating you on sales over the past 24 hours, brands to be on the look-out for, tricks, tips, and more!  If you’re looking for tips on finding a wife as amazing as mine though…you’re on your own!  I’ve got the only Kirstie! Ha!  So welcome aboard and we hope you enjoy the ride!

How did you get started selling on eBay?
